The following information may be of use to you in
reply to your enquiry of the 14th March.
I was asked by the Far East Department in March last
year to discuss with you the aesirability of referring to the
Advisory Committee the question of the best way of obtaining
financial support for the development of Chinese studies in
Hong Kong University. I enclose e copy of the record of our
discussion, which was amended and passed by you. As ar sult
of cur interview, it was decided here not to refer the subject
to the havisory committee, and there, so far as i was concerned,

the matter ended.
Subsequently it was decided this year to refer to the
Advisory Committee the specific proposals reisting to examination
in Chinese, which had been made by the Vice-Chancellor of the
University. On this subject the Committe, as you remember,
passed certain resolutions recorded in the minutes of the 24th
